September 2014

School Year Reminders

Start Date

Bienvenue!  Classes will begin September 5 at 9 am.

Parking

Parking can be tight, especially as the year begins.  Do remember to leave parking spaces available for the patrons of the Crestwood Shops. We understand parking can be hard to come by so please allow extra time to find a space in the church parking lot or along the street and avoid the spaces in front of the shops.

Textbooks

Check the La Causerie web site for information on where textbooks can be purchased, or discuss this with your teacher and other students the first day of class.

Helpful Hints for Classes

Please fill out a nametag each week.  On the first day of class, we will have a table set up on the first floor for nametags and late registration. After that, nametags will be in the hallway on the third floor.  Our teachers want to be able to call you by name and the nametags will help you get quickly acquainted with your classmates so you can have a more enjoyable and personal experience.

Books do get left behind sometimes so we suggest you put your name in all your textbooks and reference books.   You’ll be glad to find your lost book in our Lost and Found.

La Causerie totes will be available at registration for a reduced price of $10.

Fall Business Meeting

Watch for the date of the fall business meeting in the next newsletter.  Each year there are two meetings to which all members are welcome. The business meeting is relatively short, and is a great opportunity for any member to give input to the La Causerie organization. You’ll get to meet the officers who manage our organization, see our operating budget and its allocations, get updates on enrollment and learn about plans for upcoming activities.

Cultural Programs

We are interested in offering at least three or four cultural programs for each language throughout the school year.  If you have suggestions or ideas, please talk with any of the board members or Amanda Hassett, who will get you in touch with the right person. We pay a $50 honorarium to speakers and we take them out to lunch if they have time.

Latin America Film Festival at the Rio Theatre

The Rio Theatre begins a Latin American Film Festival this weekend. The Rio is located in Overland Park at 7204 W 80th St.  The films show at 11 a.m. Theatre doors open at 10:30 am.  Tickets are $6.00 per person and must be paid in cash; credit cards are not accepted. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles, and each film is followed by a group discussion. The festival will show the following films:

Las Analfabetas (Illiterate) on Sept 6
Las Paredes Hablan (Words Behind Walls) on Sept.13
Fermin Las Glorias Del Tango (Vermin Tango Glories) on Sept. 20
La Distancia Mas Larga (The Longest Distance) on Sept. 27
Princessa Rojas (Red Princess) on Oct. 4.

Treats

We hope you enjoy the snacks provided each week by your fellow students and will volunteer at some time in the year to bring some. All contributions are appreciated. There is a sign up sheet in the Social Room to volunteer snacks for Friday mornings. You will not be expected to feed the whole school -- three or four other members will contribute, too. La Causerie provides the coffee and tea and we ask for donations to help cover the beverage costs, which are not allotted in the La Causerie budget.
