Italian Level I (1.5 hours)

This is an introductory course designed for students who have never before studied Italian or have not studied or used their Italian for many years. The goal of this class is to provide members with a basic knowledge of Italian, to encourage comprehension and communication through in class work, dialogue and at-home preparation.

Books : Prego 6th addition. Chapters covered: preliminary, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Do NOT purchase an edition earlier to the 6th, as editions are very different and, while you may save some money, you will be lost in class and on homework.
Italian Level II (1.5 hours)

This class builds upon the foundations established in Level I. The goal of the class is to enable students to achieve a higher level of understanding and ability to communicate in Italian while covering some of the more intricate aspects of Italian grammar. Comprehension and communication are achieved through in-class work and dialogue as well as at-home preparation.

Italian III Grammar

Instructor: Gabi Chitwood
Members should have completed Level I and Level II, or their equivalent, and therefore had attained an overall foundation in Italian grammar. Members taking this course should feel comfortable participating in every day conversations. The main goal of this course is to achieve the ability to discuss various topics such as everyday activities, media, movies, vacation and holidays with ease. Grammar will focus on various tenses such as the present tense of regular verbs, some irregular verbs, future and future perfect, adjectives and adverbs. We will discuss the Italian culture as well. Dialogue is encouraged.
From 9:30 to 10 a.m. this class will focus on guided conversation. We will cover how to initiate, maintain and close conversations; how to communicate and respond to feelings and emotions; how to express opinions, how to give and get information, how to describe likes and dislikes, and everyday activities. Members will be able to build upon what they already know by listening and speaking Italian.

Italian III Guided Conversation
10 11 a.m.
Instructor: Kathryn Davis
This class is aimed at students of intermediate level. The aim is to help the student gain confidence in their language skills by speaking and listening to Italian, in a supportive environment. Special attention will be paid to enabling expression, sentence construction, and the pronunciation of individual students, and encouraging the student to think constructively, using already familiar vocabulary. We will also build vocabulary in practical areas such as travel, describing likes and dislikes and everyday activities, using some reading materials of intermediate level to facilitate discussion.
Italian IV Conversation
10 a.m. 11 a.m.
Instructor: Gabi Chitwood
Members should have completed Level III, or its equivalent, and have attained an overall foundation in Italian grammar. Members taking this course should feel comfortable participating in more complex conversation. Communication will be exclusively in Italian. The main goal of this course is to maintain and improve the members fluency and confidence in speaking and understanding Italian. While some written homework might be assigned, the course is mainly oriented toward spontaneous and impromptu conversation. .
Books or materials used: Although no texts or manuals are required, regular reading of Italian newspapers and magazines online is highly encouraged for review of articles, newspaper and general Italian news and culture.
Italian IV Advanced Grammar
11:00 a.m. 12 noon
Instructor: Gabi Chitwood
Members should have completed Level III, or its equivalent, and had attained an overall foundation in Italian grammar. Members taking this course should feel comfortable participating in more complex conversation. Communication will be exclusively in Italian. The course text as well as short stories, magazines and articles will be used and topics of conversations will be given in advance. Members will have the opportunity to do any necessary research or other homework in order to come to class fully prepared to be engaged in conversation. Handouts might be used. The use of the Internet is highly encouraged for review of articles, newspaper and general Italian news and culture. Some written homework might be assigned.
