INTRODUCTORY SPANISH I

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This grammar course is for students who have never before studied Spanish or for those who have not used the language for so long that they need to start over. Class is 1 hour.

 

Prerequisite: None.

 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVE

Completion of the following chapters and topics.

 

Preliminary Chapter

Ÿ Greetings.                                                Ÿ Numbers: 0 - 30.

Ÿ The Spanish alphabet.                              Ÿ Expressing there is / there are with Hay.

Ÿ Pronunciation.                                       Ÿ Expressing likes with Gustar.

Ÿ ¿Cómo es usted?                                     Ÿ ¿Qué hora es? Expressing time.

   Using Ser to describe self.                        Ÿ Interrogatives.

 

Chapter 1

Ÿ Identifying people, places and things.         Ÿ Negation.

Ÿ Singular nouns: gender and articles.        Ÿ Asking yes / no questions.

Ÿ Nouns and articles: plural forms.             Ÿ Intonation / Inversion.

Ÿ Subject pronouns.                                  Ÿ Introduction to Estar.

Ÿ Present tense of AR verbs.

 

Chapter 2

Ÿ Numbers: 31 - 100.                                Ÿ Summary of uses of Ser.

Ÿ Stress and accent marks.                         Ÿ Possessive adjectives.

Ÿ Describing with adjectives.                      Ÿ Present tense of ER and IR verbs.

This grammar course is for students who have been introduced to the Spanish language but are still at a beginning level. Class is 1 1/2 hours so that in-class time for speaking practice is included.

 

Prerequisite: To chapter 3 of the textbook, Puntos de partida, or its equivalent.

Chapter 3

Ÿ Using tag phrases.                                   Ÿ Idioms with Tener.

Ÿ Numbers: 100 and above.                       Ÿ Expressing destination and future actions

Ÿ Demonstrative adjectives and pronouns.        with Ir.

Ÿ Expressing actions / states with:               Ÿ The contraction Al.

   Tener, Venir, Preferir, Querer, Poder.          Ÿ Using Mucho and Poco.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The grammar part of this course continues the subjunctive and its uses, and introduces future and conditional verb forms. This course will also use selected readings and audio-visual material to provide more exposure to spoken and written Spanish in historical and cultural contexts. Class is 1 hour.

 

Prerequisite: To chapter 15 of the textbook, Puntos de partida, or its equivalent.

Students should have some degree of fluency in speaking ability.

CONVERSATION FOR THE INTERMEDIATE STUDENT

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This conversation course is intended to help students gain fluency and confidence in speaking and understanding spoken Spanish. The instructor will facilitate the conversation and assist with the correct use of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Class is 1 hour.

 

Prerequisite

Ÿ Students should be able to speak in complete sentences in the present and past tenses, and have sufficient vocabulary to discuss a variety of topics.

Ÿ Preferred placement is given to students not enrolled in another Spanish conversation class at La Causerie.

There is no required textbook. Topics and material are determined by the instructor.

CONVERSATION FOR THE ADVANCED STUDENT

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This conversation course is intended to allow students to practice speaking and listening to spoken Spanish through dynamic conversations and discussions of some depth. The instructor will moderate and assist as needed.

 

Prerequisite

Ÿ Students should be able to participate fully in dialogue without disruptive pauses.    Students should be able to speak with sufficient grammatical accuracy and sufficient   vocabulary so that they can enter into more lengthy and complex conversations.

Ÿ Preferred placement is given to students not enrolled in another Spanish conversation class at La Causerie.
